Novak Djokovic stunned the tennis world on Saturday, defeating reigning champion Jannik Sinner in a thrilling five-set semi-final to book his place in the Australian Open men’s singles final against Carlos Alcaraz.

The 38-year-old Serbian legend, chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title, came from behind to beat Sinner 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a gruelling 4-hour, 9-minute encounter at Rod Laver Arena.

Djokovic, who had lost his last five matches to the Italian, dropped to his knees in emotion after sealing victory.

“It feels surreal,” Djokovic said after the match. “I have tremendous respect for Jannik; he pushed me to the limit. Tonight, I just found a way to win.”

On the other side of the draw, world number one Carlos Alcaraz survived a dramatic 5-hour, 27-minute battle against Alexander Zverev.

The young Spaniard overcame cramping and a fifth-set deficit to triumph 6-4, 7-6(7/5), 6-7(3/7), 6-7(4/7), 7-5, keeping alive his quest for a first Australian Open title.

“I just hate giving up,” said Alcaraz. “This is one of the best matches I have ever won.”

The upcoming final promises a clash of generations: Djokovic, the seasoned champion aiming to extend his record, against Alcaraz, the rising star seeking to complete a career Grand Slam and become the youngest man in the Open era to win all four majors.

In doubles action, wildcards John Peers and Olivia Gadecki retained the Australian Open mixed doubles title, defeating Kristina Mladenovic and Manuel Guinard 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 — the first team to retain the crown since 1988.

Fans can now look forward to a historic showdown in Melbourne as Djokovic and Alcaraz battle for glory.

Man City Verdict Puts Trophy-Laden Era Under Fresh Scrutiny As Sanctions Loom

Published

on

Manchester City’s trophy-laden era has come under renewed scrutiny after the club was reportedly found guilty of 114 of the 115 Premier League financial-rule charges brought against it.

The reported verdict, disclosed by The Athletic on Friday, September 25, relates to alleged breaches covering the period between 2009 and 2018.

The independent hearing lasted more than two years before the outcome emerged.

However, the case is not yet over, as the Premier League has not announced any sanction and Manchester City are expected to appeal the verdict.

The charges include allegations that the club failed to provide accurate financial information and breached rules relating to payments to players and coaches, as well as financial sustainability requirements.

City have consistently denied the allegations.

The reported verdict could have wider implications for the Premier League because the club has won eight league titles, four FA Cups, seven League Cups and one Champions League during the period in which the allegations have been investigated.

Potential sanctions under the league’s rules can include financial penalties and sporting punishments, with points deductions and expulsion among the measures that have been discussed in coverage of the case.

However, no punishment has been confirmed at this stage.

The uncertainty also means questions remain over whether any eventual sanction could affect Manchester City’s past achievements, current squad or future participation in the Premier League.

For now, the reported guilty findings mark a major development in one of English football’s longest-running disciplinary cases, but the final outcome will depend on the sanctioning process and City’s expected appeal.
