Senator Condemns Death Of Delta Community Leader In Military Custody
Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly, has expressed his deep sorrow over the death of Pa James Oghoroko, the President-General of Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area.
Oghoroko died in military detention on December 4, 2024, under what the senator described as distressing circumstances.
In a statement issued in Warri, Delta State, Senator Dafinone condemned the events leading to Oghoroko’s death and called for the immediate release of five other community leaders who have been detained by the Nigerian military since August 2024.

These detainees include Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, Pa Anthony Ahwemuria, and Mrs Rita Akata.
Dafinone said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko, President-General of the Okuama community, who died in military custody under distressing circumstances.”
He also emphasised Oghoroko’s importance to the community, noting that his death is a significant loss to both his family and the entire Delta Central region. Dafinone extended his condolences to the bereaved and expressed hopes that the community would find the strength to cope with the loss.
The Senator sharply criticized the military’s actions, stating that the prolonged detention of the community leaders without trial violates their human rights and undermines the rule of law. He demanded that the detained individuals either be charged in court or released immediately.
“The current posture of the military authorities, where they have assumed the position of prosecutor and the judge in their case, doesn’t speak well for Nigeria’s democracy,” Dafinone added.
He also expressed concern over the conditions under which detainees are being held, questioning the well-being of the remaining leaders from Okuama. He warned that the military’s dual role as accuser and judge could erode trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Dafinone assured the Okuama people of his unwavering support in their pursuit of justice and called for greater transparency and accountability from the military.
“Our democracy rests on the pillars of justice, equity, and due process, and any deviation from these principles erodes public confidence in our institutions,” he concluded.
