Spain Defeats Italy, Qualifies For Euro 2024 Round Of 16

Published

on

With a dominant 1-0 win over Italy on Thursday, Spain secured their berth in the Euro 2024 Round of 16 ahead of schedule.

Riccardo Calafiori’s own goal in the 54th minute proved decisive in a dominant display by La Roja, ensuring they top Group B.

Despite the narrow scoreline, Spain’s performance was commanding, particularly in the first half where they controlled the game against Italy, replicating their earlier strong showing against Croatia.

Nico Williams stood out, tormenting Napoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo and providing the crucial cross that led to Calafiori’s unfortunate own goal.

Luis de la Fuente’s squad now holds a flawless record of six points atop their group, gearing up to face Albania on Monday with a secured place in the knockout stage and displaying championship-worthy form.

Italy, on the other hand, faced a stark reality check with a deserved defeat on Thursday, as a dynamic Spain continuously threatened Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal while the Azzurri failed to register a single shot on target.

The match echoed memories of the Euro 2012 final between these two teams, where Spain asserted dominance in a 4-0 victory, marking a pinnacle for tiki-taka football on the international stage.

Despite their setback, Luciano Spalletti’s team remains hopeful as they currently sit in second place with three points.

A draw against Croatia on Monday would secure their qualification for the knockout stage, ensuring they advance behind Spain in the group standings.

Euro 2024: Mbappe Starts For France Against Poland After Injury

Published

on

Kylian Mbappe is back in the France starting line-up for Tuesday’s Euro 2024 clash with Poland, his first appearance since suffering a broken nose against Austria just over a week ago.

Mbappe injured himself late on in the 1-0 victory over the Austrians on June 17 and did not play any part in last Friday’s 0-0 draw with the Netherlands in Leipzig as a result.

The new Real Madrid signing, who must wear a protective face mask, captains a France side who have already qualified for the last 16 before the Group D finale in Dortmund.

He returns in one of two changes made by coach Didier Deschamps to his line-up, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola getting a first international start as Antoine Griezmann and Marcus Thuram drop out.

Where France finish in the section depends both on their result and the outcome of the simultaneous encounter between the Netherlands and Austria.

Poland are already eliminated but their captain and record goal-scorer Robert Lewandowski makes his first start of the competition after injury.
