Supreme Court Adjourns Hearing On Naira Crisis

Published

on

The Supreme Court of Nigeria, sitting in the capital city of Abuja, has postponed a hearing in a case brought by three states against the Federal Government.

The states are seeking an injunction to halt the full implementation of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s policy to redesign the naira currency.

In a recent development in  nine additional states have requested to join the original lawsuit filed by Kogi, Kaduna, and Zamfara states. The states are Katsina, Lagos, Cross River, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, and Sokoto, making the total number of plaintiffs ten.

However, two states, Edo and Bayelsa, have applied to be joined as respondents in the case.

The case will be heard by a seven-member panel, with Justice John Okoro leading the proceedings, and the plaintiffs have been ordered to amend their documents to be presented as a single group.

While the legal case is pending a hearing, the previous order to suspend the ban on the 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes remains in effect.

According to a report by BIZTELLERS, a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court recently issued a unanimous ruling granting an interim injunction that prevents the Federal Government from implementing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) deadline of February 10 for the replacement of old naira notes with new ones.

This ruling came in response to a motion ex-parte filed on February 3rd by three northern states – Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara – who sought to halt the implementation of the CBN’s policy, and were granted the interim injunction by the seven-member panel of the Supreme Court.

Prior to Wednesday’s hearing, BIZTELLERS reported that the Presidency had stated that neither the government nor the CBN had made a decision regarding the continued use of the old 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes as legal tender, since the case was still under consideration in the supreme Court.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on media and Publicity,  said the FG would make its position on the new naira policy known after the determination of the suit on Wednesday.
