Tems, Wizkid others won at 2022 BET Awards

Celebrated Singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, Award-winning artist, Ayo Balogun better known as Wizkid and other Nigerian artists stole the show at the BET Awards presentation, which honors Black excellence in music, culture, and sports.
At the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, the ceremony took place on Sunday night.
Nigerian artists did the nation proud at the event, which is regarded as one of the biggest recognitions in Black entertainment globally, with historic accolades and electrifying performances.
Tems won the Best International Act, making history as the first Nigerian female artist to win the prestigious category.
The talented singer beat Nigeria’s Fireboy, Dave from the UK, Dinos from France, Fally Ipupa from Congo, Little Simz from the UK, Ludmilla from Brazil, Major League Djz from South Africa, and Tayc from France, to win the award

Receiving the award, Tems urged women and girls to continue on their chosen path, adding that the hard work will soon pay off.
Other Nigerian artists who have won the award in the past include 2Baba, D’banj, Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.
Wizkid’s “Essence” featuring Tems and Justin Bieber also clinched the Best Collaboration award, making it a double win for the talented female singer.
Essence was nominated against ‘Every Change I Get’ by DJ Khaled ft Lil baby and Lil Durk; ‘Family Ties’ by Baby Seem ft Kenderick Lamar; ‘Whole Lotta’ by Bia ft Nicki Minaj; ‘Way 2 Sexy’, Drake ft Future and Young Thug, and ‘Kiss me More’ by Doja Cat ft SZA.
Beiber joined Wizkid and Tems in “Essence” remix in August 2021.
Singer Fireboy thrilled the fans with his electrifying performance at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
He performed on the same stage as well-known artists from over the world including Diddy, Lil Wayne, Roddy Rich, and many more, and the audience applauded him for his excellent performance.
Following Fireboy’s performances of “Playboy” and “Peru” during the event, fans have praised the YBNL-signed musician on Twitter.
During the pre-show outdoor event on Sunday night, which came before the main ceremony, Nigerian producer Pheelz performed his popular song, Finesse, before an enthusiastic audience.
Pheelz tweeted about his historic appearance: “About to be the first international artist to perform at the BET pre-show. Yeah I am super gassed”.
Tems, Wizkid, Fireboy, and Pheelz have received praise for their great wins and performances from Nigerian celebrities and fans, who have flocked to social media to express their gratitude for bringing Afrobeats to the world.

Gas Explosion in Katsina Filling Station Damages Six Vehicles
A gas cylinder explosion at a filling station in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State has resulted in significant damage to six vehicles, according to a statement from the Katsina State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Friday, November 15, 2024.
He explained that a loud explosion alerted police operatives from the Jibia Divisional Police Headquarters. Responding promptly, the Divisional Police Officer led a team to the site, supported by military personnel.

“Upon arrival, operatives found a truck loaded with gas cylinders engulfed in flames at Tamal filling station, along Kagadama-Magamar Jibia Road,” Sadiq-Aliyu stated. The joint team acted swiftly, deploying measures to protect lives and limit property damage. Their efforts successfully extinguished the fire.
The spokesperson added, “Six motor vehicles were significantly affected by the fire incident, but fortunately, no life was lost.”
State Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, has directed a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Updates on the findings will be provided as investigations progress.
This incident highlights the need for heightened safety measures at gas filling stations to prevent such occurrences.
