U.S. Crude-Oil Futures Extend Rally to Fifth Day

Published

…Modest gains on top of four-day, 5.3% rise

…Weekly jobless claims, 3Q GDP data point to economic recovery

…Strong refinery runs underpin market strength

NEW YORK -The rally that has lifted U.S. crude-oil futures to five-week highs continued for a fifth day Thursday, helped by signs of an improving U.S. economy.

Prices shook off a bout of profit-taking to log modest gains on top of a 5.3% rally over the prior four sessions that was spurred by signs of stronger refiner demand for crude.

Some analysts said market participants are biding time ahead of Friday’s report on U.S. November non-farm payrolls, a widely anticipated sign post on the state of the economy in the world’s biggest oil consumer.

Light, sweet crude oil for January delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange was up 27 cents at $97.47 a barrel, after flitting on either side of Wednesday’s settlement, which was the highest price since Oct. 29.

OILICE January Brent crude was 44 cents lower, at $111.44 a barrel, continuing under pressure from worries over potential higher output from Iraq and Libya, as well reduced U.S. reliance on oil imports.

U.S. crude found support from economic data that was stronger than analysts anticipated and could be suggestive of growing oil demand.

New claims for unemployment benefits fell for a third straight week last week, the Labor Department said. Initial claims were 298,000 in the Nov. 30 week, below economists’ expectations of 320,000.

The Commerce Department said third-quarter U.S gross domestic product grew at a faster pace than initially thought, recording a 3.6% rise, compared with forecasts of 3.2% growth.

Taken together, the latest data are “a strong sign that we’ve turned the corner here. We’re looking at stronger growth and that means stronger oil demand,” said Carl Larry, analyst at Oil Outlooks and Opinions.

Prices have been supported this week on news that U.S. crude oil stocks fell for first time in 11 weeks, as refiners in the key Gulf Coast region boosted crude oil processing by 6.7% last week to a record high of 8.56 million barrel a day.

The Energy Information Administration reported that strong gain pushed nationwide operations to their highest level since mid-September and cut inventories by 5.6 million barrels a day, the biggest drop since mid-July. The stock drop capped a 10-week, 10% rise in crude stocks of 35.8 million barrels. But stocks at 385.8 million barrels still are the highest at the end of November since 1930, EIA data show.

Reformulated gasoline blendstock futures for January delivery were 0.8 cent higher, at $2.72 a gallon, while January diesel/heating oil was 0.45 cent lower, at $3.0546 a gallon.

FG Introduces New Incentives To Revitalize Nigeria’s Oil & Gas Industry

In a strategic move to revitalize Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, the Federal Government has unveiled two key fiscal incentives aimed at attracting investment and enhancing energy security.

The announcement was made by Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy on Wednesday.

The first initiative, the Value Added Tax (VAT) Modification Order 2024, introduces critical exemptions for essential energy products and infrastructure, including Diesel, Feed Gas, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Electric Vehicles, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) infrastructure, and Clean Cooking Equipment.

These exemptions are designed to reduce living costs for Nigerians, promote energy security, and accelerate the transition to cleaner energy alternatives.

The second initiative, the Notice of Tax Incentives for Deep Offshore Oil & Gas Production, offers new tax relief options for deep offshore exploration projects.

This measure aims to position Nigeria’s deep offshore basin as a premier destination for international oil and gas investments, boosting the country’s appeal to foreign investors.

These reforms are part of a broader set of policy initiatives, known as Policy Directives 40-42, endorsed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The directives reflect the administration’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in the energy sector and enhancing Nigeria’s competitive edge in the global oil and gas market.
