‘We’re Dying in Silence,’ Ogun Retirees Lament Non-Implementation of Pension Review

Man Arrested For Burglary In Ogun Churches

Retired civil servants in Ogun State have called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to implement the long-delayed Consequential Adjustment in Pensions (CAP), lamenting that the non-implementation has left many of them struggling to survive amid Nigeria’s harsh economic situation.

The appeal was made on Tuesday during the 2025 Pensioners Day Celebration held at the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) Secretariat in Leme, Abeokuta.

In his address, the state NUP chairman, Comrade Waidi Oloyede, expressed deep concern over the government’s inaction, saying pensioners have been pushed to the brink while active workers continue to enjoy better remuneration.

“The long pause—or should we say sudden halt—in the implementation of the much-awaited pension review has greatly agitated our minds,” Oloyede said.

“The paltry pensions being paid are nothing to write home about amid the harsh economic realities. Many of our members are facing serious health challenges while food and drugs remain out of reach, leading to untimely deaths.”

Oloyede noted that although the state government inaugurated a committee in 2022 to review pensions, “nothing has been heard from the committee since then.”

He reminded the government that the 2019 Federal Government circular directed that pension reviews be carried out in line with consequential adjustments arising from the minimum wage increase.

According to him, the delay has worsened the plight of pensioners, many of whom can no longer afford medical treatment or basic necessities.

“After retirement, we receive little or no recognition from the government despite years of sacrifice. When pensioners are empowered, they can maintain their dignity and contribute positively to their communities,” he added.

The NUP chairman also urged the state to introduce support systems such as subsidized healthcare, counseling services, and home care assistance for senior citizens.

Also speaking at the Tuesday event, the Ogun State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Hammed Benco, commended the resilience of pensioners and assured them that the NLC would continue to push for their welfare.

“We will continue to work closely with pensioners to ensure their sacrifices are not in vain. Government at all levels must honour their commitments to those who served the nation,” Benco stated.

Representing the state government, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of State Pensions, Mrs. Arinola Adetayo, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to pensioners’ welfare.

“Your welfare is not taken for granted. The state has not defaulted in monthly payments, and we are working towards sustainable pension reforms to make life easier for our retirees,” she said.

Xenophobia Horror: 268 Nigerians Flee South Africa, Arrive Lagos Today

Published

on

A total of 268 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks are expected to arrive in Lagos today as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to protect its citizens abroad.

The returnees, who form the first batch of those seeking voluntary repatriation, are being transported aboard an Air Peace evacuation flight scheduled to land at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at about 5:00 a.m.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, is expected to receive the evacuees on behalf of the Federal Government upon their arrival.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, who said the Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria in Pretoria, Ambassador Alexander Ajayi, would accompany the returnees and formally hand them over to Nigerian authorities.

The evacuation follows renewed xenophobic attacks in South Africa, which have left many foreign nationals, including Nigerians, fearful for their safety and seeking a return to their home countries.

According to the ministry, the ongoing screening exercise for Nigerians willing to return home voluntarily has been extended until Sunday, June 14, 2026, to enable more affected citizens to participate in the evacuation programme.

The ministry said the extension underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare, safety and protection of Nigerians living overseas.

It also assured that relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) have made adequate arrangements for the reception, documentation and support of the returnees upon arrival.

The latest evacuation marks another chapter in the long-standing concerns over xenophobic violence in South Africa, where Nigerians and other African migrants have periodically faced hostility, attacks and displacement.

Federal authorities have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the interests of Nigerians abroad while continuing diplomatic engagements aimed at addressing the situation and ensuring the safety of affected citizens.

June 12 Showdown: Falana, Falz Lead Nationwide Protest Against Hardship, Insecurity

JusticeForSylvester: Oromoni's Family Hires Falana over son's death

A coalition of civil society organisations, activists, labour groups and youth movements has declared June 12, 2026, a day of nationwide protest against worsening insecurity, economic hardship and deteriorating living conditions across Nigeria.

The protest, scheduled to coincide with the country’s Democracy Day celebration, is being championed by prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana and popular musician-turned-activist Falz, alongside several civil society leaders and advocacy groups.

In a joint statement released ahead of the demonstration, the coalition expressed concern over what it described as the growing suffering of Nigerians amid rising insecurity, inflation and poverty.

According to the group, millions of citizens have little reason to celebrate Democracy Day as many communities continue to battle terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

The statement was jointly endorsed by Falana, National Chairman of the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB); Hassan Taiwo Soweto of the #EndBadGovernance Movement; Yinka Folarin of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR); Falz and several other civil society advocates.

The coalition lamented that innocent Nigerians are being killed, abducted and displaced while many families continue to live in fear due to the worsening security situation across the country.

“The Nigerian people deserve a government that places the protection of lives and property at the centre of governance,” the coalition stated.

The group further demanded the immediate release of citizens currently being held captive by kidnappers and criminal groups in various parts of the country.

It also criticised what it described as inadequate responses to insecurity despite repeated assurances by authorities that the situation was improving.

According to the coalition, schools remain vulnerable to attacks, farmers face challenges accessing their farmlands and many major highways are still considered unsafe for travellers.

Beyond security concerns, the coalition highlighted the growing economic hardship facing Nigerians, citing rising fuel prices, currency devaluation, increased electricity tariffs and the soaring cost of essential goods and services.

The statement noted that food prices have continued to rise sharply, making it increasingly difficult for families to meet their basic needs.

It added that transportation costs have become unbearable for many citizens, while small and medium-sized businesses are struggling to survive due to high operating costs, unstable electricity supply and declining consumer purchasing power.

The coalition also expressed concern over stagnant wages and persistent inflation, arguing that workers’ incomes can no longer adequately support their households.

Explaining the purpose of the June 12 protest, the organisers said the nationwide action is intended to compel the government to take urgent and practical steps to tackle insecurity and implement policies that will ease the economic burden on citizens.

The coalition called on workers, students, traders, artisans, market women, professionals, unemployed youths, religious organisations and labour unions to mobilise and participate peacefully in the demonstration.

“The time has come for Nigerians to speak with one voice and demand security, dignity and a decent standard of living. Enough of the killings. Enough of the kidnappings. Enough of the hunger. Enough of the suffering,” the statement added.

The organisers described the planned protest as a democratic expression of citizens’ frustrations and a collective demand for a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.

2027: ‘Even If Insecurity Worsens, Power Will Not Change Hands’ – Okpebholo Declares

Published

on

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has insisted that political power in Nigeria will remain unchanged even if insecurity in the country worsens, declaring that the ruling party remains firmly in control ahead of future elections.

Okpebholo made the statement on Tuesday during the flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign for the upcoming local government council elections in Edo South Senatorial District.

The governor said the recent rise in insecurity across parts of the country is being politicised, alleging that some actors are deliberately worsening the situation to discredit President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He maintained that such efforts would not succeed in altering the political direction of the country.

“Even if insecurity worsens, power will not change hands. They can even kidnap all of us—there is no vacancy in Aso Rock,” Okpebholo declared.

He further argued that those behind the alleged political manipulation of insecurity have no viable alternative agenda, stressing that violence would only harm ordinary citizens rather than achieve political gain.

The governor also defended the performance of the federal government, noting that key policy decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidy, were beginning to translate into visible development projects across states.

He commended candidates of the All Progressives Congress who emerged from the party primaries for the forthcoming council polls, urging them to take the party’s message of development to grassroots communities.

Okpebholo expressed confidence that the party’s performance at the local government elections would strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The event also featured the official unveiling of APC candidates for various positions in Edo South Senatorial District.
