Whitney Inquest Begins April 4th, Chrisland Seeks Autopsy Review
The inquest hearing to determine the cause of death of 12-year-old Whitney Adeniran, a student at Chrisland International School who died during the school’s inter-house sports activities at Agege Stadium, Lagos on February 9, 2023, is set to begin on April 4th.
The Coroner Magistrate, Olabisi Fajana, set the date on Monday after hearing submissions from all the lawyers who appeared before the Magistrate Court in Ogba.
Femi Falana (SAN), the counsel for the deceased family, informed the court that they were unable to file a witness statement as instructed by the court on the last adjourned date.
During the hearing, both the counsel for Chrisland School, Olukayode Enitan (SAN), and the Lagos State lawyer, Akin George, concurred with Falana’s statement and sought the court’s directives on how to file their processes.
However, Magistrate Fajana informed the lawyers that she would consult with the Chief Magistrate to ensure that the processes were filed before the Coroner.
In the meantime, Enitan informed the court that he had filed an application seeking samples and materials to carry out an independent evaluation of the autopsy report.
Falana countered the application by stating that they have not been served and reminded the court that the autopsy of the deceased was conducted in the presence of the school representatives and other concerned parties.
However, in response to the application, the state counsel, George, clarified that the state only received a letter, not an application, and assured the court that the state would respond at the appropriate time.
As a result, Magistrate Fajana adjourned the trial’s commencement until April 4th and directed all lawyers to ensure that their processes were filed and confirmed by April 3rd.
On March 2nd, the Lagos State Government disclosed that Adeniran died from asphyxia and electrocution.
On March 1st, Whitney’s mother, Blessing, shared via an Instagram live video that the autopsy conducted on her daughter showed that she died from electrocution during the school’s sports activities.
However, the school management had released a statement after her death, claiming that she had slumped in public view and not under any hidden circumstances.
The deceased was laid to rest on March 2nd.
