Nigerian singer Skales has stirred conversation by asserting that fellow artist and former label mate Wizkid never aided him in his musical journey.

In a candid post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Skales clarified that the support he received came primarily from his former record label boss, Banky W, as well as fellow artists Olamide, Timaya, and Burna Boy.

“Put some respect on my name… I don tell una the only person sef wey help me na Olamide and Timaya and Banky W… much respect to Burna,” he wrote.

Skales expressed frustration over the tendency for fans to pit artists against one another, stating, “I’m a don with this music, and all I wanna do is make music and stay away from all that negative toxic bullshit.”

The discussion escalated in the comments when a user with the handle @Perfect_Mipo claimed, “Wizkid made you.”

Skales promptly rebutted, saying, “Ask am make him tell una how… got respect for him but he dint help me… if anything, Banky deserves the praise and respect for believing in teenagers.”

Both Skales and Wizkid were among the first artists signed to Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) in the early 2010s, but they eventually left the label to pursue their own successful careers.

As the music industry continues to evolve, Skales’ comments shed light on the complexities of collaboration and recognition within the Nigerian music scene.

He revealed that some music executives and media personalities have even denied him access to their platforms solely because of this resemblance.

“The Sound City presenter even confronted me at Club Rumours one time boasting that he was the one that ordered presenters at his station not to play my songs because I was mimicking 2Face.

“The event planner at Festac Carnival insisted that I won’t perform because I look like their King 2Face. The same thing happened when I went for an interview at Cool FM; the presenter said he can’t interview someone who imitates 2Face.

“I complained to my mum and my record label boss, Baba Keke but they urged to be calm. Sometimes, when I try to pay homage to 2Face when we meet in public, some of his team members will block me.”

Joe El shared that people began to embrace his music after collaborating with 2Baba on the song ‘Hold On’ in 2015.

Explaining his departure from Kennis Music after 12 years, he simply stated, “The contract was over.”
