‘World May Break Heat Records Before 2031’ – UN Issues Dire Warning
The United Nations has issued a fresh climate warning, stating that the world is likely to experience record-breaking temperatures before 2031 as global warming continues to intensify.
The warning comes from a new climate outlook released by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) on Thursday, which predicts that global temperatures will remain at or near historic highs over the next several years.
According to the report, there is a high probability that at least one year between 2026 and 2030 will surpass previous temperature records, with scientists warning that the planet is steadily edging closer to critical climate thresholds.
Rising chance of record-breaking heat
The WMO forecast indicates that global average temperatures are expected to remain significantly elevated, increasing the likelihood of new heat records being set before the end of the decade.
The report also highlights that warming trends observed since 2015 are continuing, with the last decade containing the hottest years ever recorded in modern history.
Climate experts warn that this persistent rise in temperatures is driven largely by human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas.
El Niño could worsen conditions
Scientists also point to the expected return of El Niño conditions by late 2026 as a potential accelerator of global warming effects. El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon that warms ocean surface temperatures in the Pacific and often triggers extreme weather patterns worldwide.
Previous El Niño events have contributed to record-breaking global temperatures, including recent years when the world experienced some of its hottest conditions on record.
1.5°C threshold increasingly at risk
The Paris Climate Agreement aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C and preferably 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
However, the WMO warns that the world is increasingly likely to temporarily exceed the 1.5°C threshold in the coming years, even if long-term targets are still technically within reach.
The report estimates that global temperatures between 2026 and 2030 could range between 1.3°C and 1.9°C above pre-industrial levels.
Regional climate impacts expected
The outlook also predicts stronger warming in certain regions, particularly the Arctic, where temperatures are expected to rise more than three times faster than the global average during winter months.
Other projected impacts include wetter conditions across parts of the Sahel, northern Europe, Alaska, and Siberia, while regions such as the Amazon may face increased dryness.
Growing global concern
Scientists say the findings underline the urgent need for stronger global action to reduce emissions and slow the pace of climate change, warning that extreme weather events are likely to become more frequent and severe if current trends continue.

Tinubu Gov’t Does Not Engage, Everybody Is Its Enemy — Ajaero
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of failing to meaningfully engage with organised labour, alleging that the government has remained aloof despite repeated attempts to open dialogue.
Ajaero made the remarks during an appearance on the Mic On Podcast, where he spoke about the relationship between the labour movement and the Federal Government over the past few years.
According to the NLC president, the government has not been engaging with labour and only responds when workers and other groups take steps to force its attention.

“For the past two, three years, you know, it’s not a government that is engaging. This government doesn’t engage,” Ajaero said.
He described the administration as “aloof”, stressing that meaningful engagement had been lacking between the government and organised labour.
Ajaero recalled that the NLC had, by December 17, 2025, announced plans to take its grievances to the streets after months of attempts to communicate with the President.
He said the labour movement had written to President Tinubu from June through December but received no response.
“Well, by December 17th, 2025, we pulled out that we are going to the streets. After writing a letter from May, sorry June, to December to Mr. President and there was no response,” he said.
According to him, the planned action eventually led to the intervention of some state governors, who facilitated an interface between labour and the government.
He said the intervention became necessary after other channels of communication, including the office of the Minister of Labour, had failed.
“Because the whole channel—whether through the Minister of Labour or any other office—failed, collapsed. So some governors met with us, and since that time we have talked once or twice,” Ajaero said.
However, the NLC president suggested that the situation had not significantly improved, alleging that the issues raised by labour since December had largely been left unresolved.
“And those issues… December last year to now, they’re just doing their business. Everybody is their enemy,” he added.
