Speed Darlington Sues IGP For N300M Over Unlawful Detention
Nigerian rapper, Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has initiated a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over his alleged unlawful detention.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 13 for the hearing of Darlington’s case, following a request from his solicitor, Abubakar Marshal, to adjourn proceedings.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the adjournment will allow the police’s solicitor, Garba Audu, additional time to review and respond to the documents served.

This case stems from a court order issued on 23 December 2024, which directed the police to either charge Darlington or release him within 48 hours.
The court also instructed the Nigerian police to comply with the release order pending the hearing of the substantive case. Furthermore, it designated Abubakar Marshal, Esq., as a surety for Darlington.
The 39-year-old rapper was detained in Lagos over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking linked to comments he made about Burna Boy.
In his lawsuit, Darlington is seeking compensation for unlawful detention and is requesting an order for his immediate release or for him to be brought before the court.
His legal team has also alleged that he was subjected to torture and mistreatment during his detention.
