Naira Weakens Against Dollar Amid FX Shortages

Published

on

The naira’s performance against the dollar has shown typical seasonal patterns, with December seeing increased demand for the naira due to returning expatriates and holiday activities.

On the parallel market, the naira recently traded at approximately ₦1,245 to the dollar. This trend is attributed to a mix of factors, including higher remittance inflows, reduced foreign exchange supply, and market sentiment.

Analysts predict further weakening in January as dollar demand rises for imports and business activities resume.

Despite interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), such as injecting $106.5 million into the forex market, the gap between official and black-market rates remains significant.

Experts project that by the end of December, external reserves will stabilize around $34 billion, but the naira will continue to face depreciation pressures in the near term due to limited foreign exchange liquidity and market speculation.

AGN President Responds To Reports Of Arrest In Umuahia

Actors Guild sets up electoral committee for national polls

Chief Emeka Rollas, the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), has responded to viral reports alleging that he was arrested and detained by the police in Umuahia, Abia State.

The rumours suggested that Rollas was taken into custody due to his alleged involvement in imposing an unelected chairman on the Abia State chapter of the guild.

In an exclusive phone interview, Rollas categorically denied the claims, describing them as malicious and completely unfounded.

He clarified that he was not arrested but had, in fact, invited the police to intervene after a disturbance at a meeting.

“I was in Umuahia due to the death of my mother-in-law and decided to attend the first meeting called by the interim chairman of the Abia State chapter of the guild to encourage member participation,” Rollas explained.

“While addressing the members, someone emerged from the crowd and began raining abuses, even threatening me. I immediately made a distressed call to the AIG Zone 9, who intervened promptly.

“The individual was invited to the police for questioning, and the meeting continued. At the end of the meeting, I visited the police station in Umuahia and officially reported the threat to my life. That was the extent of it. I was not arrested or detained.”

Further refuting the false reports, Cornel Udofia, the spokesperson for the AGN President, issued a statement this morning.

The statement denounced the claims as “a figment of imagination” designed to embarrass the Nigerian Police Force and mislead the public.

“We have been made aware of false reports circulating in local Abia blogs, claiming that AGN National President Dr. Ejezie Emeka Rollas MON was arrested and detained by the police in Umuahia, Abia State,” Udofia’s statement read.

“Ordinarily, we would not address such baseless rumors, but for the benefit of the many supporters of our National President, and to set the record straight, we must clarify the facts.”

The statement went on to provide context for the ongoing leadership challenges within the Abia State chapter of the AGN.

Since 2024, a faction led by David Amalaha has attempted to seize control of the guild through an unlawful election. The National body, adhering to the AGN constitution, has appointed a series of interim leaders, with a court case pending.

Emmanuel Ehumadu, also known as Labista, was recently appointed as the new Interim Chairman of the Abia State Chapter, and January 9th, 2025, marked his first official meeting.

Rollas, who was in town for personal reasons, attended the meeting to encourage participation.

“After Rollas delivered his speech outlining the national programs for 2025, an individual from the crowd raised his hand to speak, only to start verbally attacking the national body and issuing threats,” the statement continued.

“At that point, Rollas contacted the AIG Zone 9 for assistance, and the individual was brought in for questioning. The meeting continued without further incident. Afterward, Rollas visited the Zone 9 Umuahia police station to formally report the threat to his life.”

Rollas’ camp reaffirmed that the AGN National President has been tirelessly working for the guild’s betterment and continues to support the legal process surrounding the Abia chapter’s leadership dispute.

Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, has candidly shared the most challenging aspect of his marriage—his wife’s substantial monthly allowance.

Renowned singer, Seun Kuti, has made it clear that he wants no involvement in the ongoing dispute between his fellow artists, Burna Boy and Speed Darlington.

The conflict began after Speed Darlington accused Burna Boy of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with American music mogul, Diddy, as a means to secure a Grammy Award. The accusation led to Speed Darlington’s arrest, further fuelling the controversy.

During a recent Instagram live session, Seun Kuti addressed fans who tried to draw him into the drama. He stated that his acceptance of diamond jewellery from Burna Boy does not place him in the position of an advisor to the Grammy-winning artist.

“Don’t involve me in Burna Boy & Speed Darlington’s case; because I collected a diamond from him doesn’t mean I’m his close adviser,” Kuti said.

The Afrobeat singer went on to highlight the irony in the allegations, pointing out that Diddy, whom Speed Darlington accused Burna Boy of associating with, played a role in making Speed Darlington famous.

He explained, “Diddy was even the one who made Speed Darlington popular. He reposted ‘Bangdadang’ which made the song popular. I have done a lot of songs, and Diddy never posted any of them, but he reposted Speed Darlington’s song.”

Seun Kuti’s remarks have since sparked discussions among fans and followers of the ongoing saga, as the fallout between Burna Boy and Speed Darlington continues to unfold.
