Why Kalu-Eke Shunned Tinubu’s CBN Board Offer
The South-East nominee of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Urum Kalu-Eke has shunned the offer.
Biztellers reports that the Consultant shunned the nomination to avoid conflict of interest, being currently engaged with the World Bank and other global financial institutions.
The Senate got wind of the development in Abuja on Wednesday, in the course of confirming the five nominees sent to them by the President.
This was contained in the report of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, which was tabled by the Committee Chairman, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru (APC Lagos East).
The committee had responsibility for screening the nominees.
Sen Abiru informed the house that Kalu-Eke did not present himself for screening.
According to Sen Abiru, four other nominees, Robert Agbede , Ado Yakubu Wanka , Prof. Murtala Sabo Sagagi and Muslimat Olanike Aliyu, appeared before and were screened by the committee.
He submitted that the Committee found them worthy of confirmation for the appointments.
He thereafter urged the Senate to confirm appointments of the four nominees who attended the screening session and decline that of Kalu-Eke.
On Kalu-Eke’s rationale, a member of the Committee, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC Abia North), informed the Senate that Kalu-Eke is one of his constituents.
He revealed that Kalu-Eke called him that he was declining the appointment to avoid conflict of interest.
According to Sen Kalu, Kalu-Eke is a consultant to the World Bank and other international financial institutions which would make him not have the required time to function well, as one of the directors of the CBN.
Sen Kalu said, “Mr President, I’m a member of the committee that carried out screening on nominees forwarded to the Senate for appointment as members of Board of Directors of CBN by President Bola Tinubu.
“During the screening exercise, Urum Kalu-Eke from Abia North, called me for not attending the session. He said that as a consultant to the World Bank and other international financial institutions, he wouldn’t take the appointment to avoid conflict of interest.”
Earlier in his presentation of report for confirmation of appointments of other nominees, Sen Abiru said all the nominees demonstrated comprehensive grasp of economic knowledge and policies.
He submitted that his committee did not receive any petition against any of the nominees.
Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, presiding over the session, put the matter to voice vote through which the house confirmed the nominees.

Earlier, residents reported hearing a loud sound from the direction of the crash before discovering that an aircraft had gone down in the swampy area.

‘Nigerians Still Exposed to Kidnappers Despite Subsidy Savings for Security’ – Atiku
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government over the continued exposure of Nigerians to kidnappers, questioning the impact of savings from fuel subsidy removal on national security.
Atiku disclosed this in a statement on Monday while reacting to the abduction of 20 travellers, including prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, in Imo State.
He described the abduction as “heartbreaking,” noting that although some of the victims had been rescued, others remained in captivity.

Atiku urged the Federal Government, Imo State Government and security agencies to act with urgency to secure the release of all those still being held.
He also raised concern over more than 70 pupils and students abducted from Mussa and Lassa in Borno State who, according to him, have remained in captivity for months.
“These children must not be forgotten. Their families deserve clear updates, and the public deserves answers,” he said.
The former vice president questioned the government’s handling of insecurity, recalling President Bola Tinubu’s promise that savings from the removal of fuel subsidy would help fund security.
“Yet Nigerians remain exposed to kidnappers on our roads, in our communities and around our schools,” Atiku said.
He said young Nigerians were facing danger at different stages of their lives, from secondary school to university and now while travelling to NYSC camps.
“Young people face danger in secondary school, struggle with unaffordable fees at university, and are now targets on their journeys to NYSC camps. This is a generation being failed at every stage,” he said.
Atiku also criticised the award of what he described as huge pipeline security contracts to politically connected companies, while ordinary Nigerians continue to face criminals.
“The first duty of government is to protect lives,” he stated.
He called for the immediate and safe rescue of every abducted young person and the return of those still unaccounted for.
Atiku also reaffirmed his commitment to building a safer and more affordable Nigeria where young people can create, build and prosper.
“My promise to build a safer and more affordable Nigeria, where young people can create, build and prosper, remains unshakable,” he said.
